The University of Alberta's Northern Alberta Medical Program (NAMP) enables medical students to complete their MD training in Grande Prairie and across northern Alberta, under the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.
Funded by the Government of Alberta, NAMP addresses physician shortages in underserved northern regions by immersing learners in real rural and regional clinical settings.
Hosted in collaboration with Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP) in Grande Prairie, the program candidates begin their first two pre-clerkship years at NWP’s Health Education Centre, co-located within the new Grande Prairie Regional Hospital. Subsequent clinical clerkship placements are offered in communities across northern Alberta (and possibly the Yukon / Northwest Territories) to equip graduates with experience relevant to rural practice.
With a class capacity of 30 new medical students per year, NAMP offers the same rigorous curriculum as the Edmonton MD program—while delivering smaller cohort sizes and enriched exposure to rural and remote healthcare.
NAMP also embraces Indigenous health initiatives through collaboration with the Wâpanachakos Indigenous Health Program (WIHP), supporting Indigenous learners and fostering culturally responsive care in northern communities.
