State of the City Cites Priority Setting as Crucial to Future Growth

Mayor Bill Given spoke to a crowd of more than 120 people at the Chamber's annual State of the City address, held at the Quality Inn Thursday, February 24.

The City is in a state of flux, Given said, and a strategic planning session planned for council in March will help them lay the groundwork for future growth.

Given said council will need to reach a consensus on what their priorities are for the organization. He says the challenge will be to think long term, and to balance the community's needs for infrastructure and services with their current fiscal reality.

Part of the, he said, will be consideration of the mix of land-uses in the city and how that impacts their ability to generate revenue, noting that residential properties (which make up 74% of Grande Prairie's tax base) consume more in services than they provide in tax revenue.
