Members of the Premier’s Council for Economic Strategy will be in Grande Prairie this week, presenting their report on key directions for future provincial planning.

The report, entitled “Shaping Alberta’s Future” was released on May 5, 2011 – almost two years after Premier Ed Stelmach formed the council to help give an external, big-picture perspective of what Alberta needs to do to secure long-term prosperity.

It includes an important call to all Albertans, outlining broad direction on important themes for our future: broadening the economy, realizing the full potential of our energy resources, preparing the province and Albertans for a global economy, and investing in the future.

The report also provides thoughts on how to ensure the province has a strong platform: fiscally, environmentally, and with respect to infrastructure – to sustain economic growth.

Under each of these five themes, the council will outline some thought-provoking ‘flagship’ initiatives for Albertans to consider, and solicit feedback on the steps required to move forward.

Council members are travelling the province this week to share their findings and start a dialogue with business and community leaders in six Alberta communities. Events are being organized with Chambers of Commerce in Grande Prairie, Lloydminster, Fort McMurray, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and Airdrie.

Chair of the Grande Prairie & District Chamber, Dave Cook says this event will provide a unique opportunity for the forward-thinkers of our region (and others) to hear details of the report, and provide feedback on the strategic direction of our province. He says the event is one of the many ways the Chamber connects business leaders to the discussions that will guide the future of our province.

“This event just goes to show the power of the Chamber network. Our Chamber, and other members of the Alberta Chamber of Commerce work very hard to maintain good relationships with the province – and the strength of those relationships are proven through opportunities like this. We’re thrilled to be part of bringing the Council to Grande Prairie, and providing our members the chance to be part of Shaping Alberta’s Future.”

As space is limited, pre-registration is required to attend. Those interested should contact the Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce Office as soon as possible at 780-532-5340. Walk-ins will not be accommodated.
